This ministry meets the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month at 10 a.m. in Room 121.
The mission of Yarns ‘n Prayers is to bring people together in several small groups to knit and crochet prayer blankets/shawls, to pray for those in our church family and community in need of prayer (whether in joyful or trying times) and to support each other.
Whether they are called prayer Shawls, Comfort Shawls, peace Shawls, or Mantles, etc., the shawl maker begins with prayers and blessing for the recipient. The intention are continued throughout the crating of the shawl. Upon completion, a final blessing is offered before the shawls is sent on its way. Some recipients have continued the kindness by making a shawl and passing it onto someone in need. The us, the blessing ripples from person-to-person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!
The shawls can be knitted, crocheted, quilted, woven, or machine knitted.
Who can receive a prayer shawl?
Anyone. It can be someone with whom you worship, someone in your family, someone with whom you work, a school classmate, a neighbor, etc. Anyone you know who is in need will benefit from receiving a prayer shawl. Just contact the Parish Office.
How can I get involved?
If you already know how to knit or crochet, get some yarn and start working. If you are able to purchase yarn, that’s great. If not, we hope to get donations of yarn or monetary donations to purchase yarn. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, look for instructions in a book or online (YouTube). Prayer shawls can be a s plan or fancy as you want. When we gather with each other, it is a lovely opportunity to get together with relatives, friends, and church members who are able to teach you how to knit or crochet. This can be a great inter-generational project!
What if I’m not able to make prayer shawls?
If you are able to donate yarn or make a monetary donation so that we can go and purchase yarn, that would be very helpful. just mark your envelope ‘prayer shawl ministry’ and drop it into the collection basket. We also appreciate prayers for those creating prayer shawls, as well as those receiving them (“prayer shawl recipients”). Also, if you have family and/or friends who knit or crochet and are not involved in a prayer shawl ministry, we would love to have them join us.
You can also help by saying this simple prayer for us as we continue to spread God’s love to everyone!
A Blanket/Shawl Maker’s Prayer:
Dear Lord; Bless the hands of the knitter/crocheter today. May each twist of the yarn guide them to create a pattern of love and comfort in their work and remind them of Your ultimate protection. Wrap them in Your spirit so that they will be more caring towards those in need. Grant them patience as they create a lap blanket or shawl. And bless their handiwork as it travels to bring comfort and peace to someone in need of Your warming embrace. Amen.
